Registering as a Sex Offender in Florida
Florida has experienced a large percentage of sexual offenses in recent years. A sexual offense is a sex crime, also referred to as a violent crime that involves unwanted sexual coercion, touching and/or penetration with another person. Sexual offenses are often categorized into low level and high level sex crimes. High level crimes are felonies and are often considered an aggravated crime. Low level crimes are seen in most instances as a minor offense and are charged as misdemeanors. However, whether a person is convicted of a misdemeanor or a felony offense they may still be required to register as a sex offender in the National Sex Offender Registry under Megan’s Law.
Regardless of whether or not a convicted sex offender serves time they will never escape the eyes of law enforcement. In 2005, the state of Florida passed a law requiring that a person convicted of an aggravated felony sex crime would be required by law to wear a GPS tracking device, also referred to as a satellite-tracking device for the rest of his or her life. This is just one of the many very harsh penalties that one may expect if caught and convicted of a serious sex crime in Florida. Other penalties that one may face for the commission of a sex crime in Florida include:
Florida Sexual Offense Penalties
- Up to Life Imprisonment
- Victim Restitution
- Community Service
- Driver’s License Suspension/Revocation
- Registration as a Sex Offender
- Permanent Mark on Criminal Record
